Intimacy with the bees

Today I spent the afternoon with Tim Neat’s bees.

Wearing a beekeeper’s suit, I was able to get very close to them and them to me. They seem to like technology, relating to frequencies that we can’t hear. They crawled all over my microphones and sound recording equipment, picking up on something I didn’t realise I was giving.

How fascinating they are. As they hang around the ramp to the hive, they stand in groups, vibrating their wings: a kind of polite threat to take off mid conversation.

Later we ate some royal jelly which is said to bring back youth.
